Each summer, the Reaud Honors College at Lamar University gives students an opportunity for professional development and to connect with other honors students. This last summer, I participated in the group that read Animal Farm by George Orwell. Our particular summer reading group was very diverse in religion, ethnicity and majors, so the perspectives taken on the book were all very different but equally interesting. Throughout the book, Orwell does a fantastic job humanizing farm animals and their struggle with what we would recognize as socialism. Animal Farm is timeless and, in a very creative manner, gives readers an in depth look at historical events.
